One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure

You know that I have been in the Trust industry for a very long time. Over the years, I have been intimately involved with settling estates.  What I found most interesting was the amount of “stuff” people accumulated over the years.  The challenge is how best to distribute the “stuff” after death. I have personally witnessed brothers and sisters turning on each other when it came time to distribute the contents of the home – what I like to call the “stuff”.  Oftentimes, the fiercest of the family squabbles are over what an outsider would call trash. Thank goodness a lot of our client’s prepare a letter that becomes incorporated into the will defining which heir receives which piece of jewelry or antique candy dish.  Without this letter, all bets are off on how the heirs will react when dividing the property.
